ARC: Six Ways It’s Different

Real-Time Sharing of Scientific Discoveries

ARC: World-class scientists with complementary expertise share the results of their discoveries (successes and failures) in real time without the delays associated with the publication of scientific papers.

Our Accelerated Research Collaboration™ (ARC™) model is revolutionizing the process for developing new medicines for all diseases. The model thoroughly integrates the contributions of all those who participate in the value chain of making new medicines.

As a result, the Myelin Repair Foundation's ARC model:

  • Produces and patents more high-quality targets to fill the pharma pipeline of potential treatment targets
  • Translates discoveries made in animal models to the human system
  • Partners with the pharmaceutical companies to develop and bring new treatments to market
  • More rapidly produces new treatments, and thereby improves the quality of life for millions of patients living with diseases for which there are few, in any, effective treatments or cures.

The ARC Model: Many Advantages Over Traditional Research

The ARC Model has different from traditional research in six key ways:

1

Real-Time Sharing of Scientific Discoveries

ARC: World-class scientists with complementary expertise share discoveries in real time without the delays associated with the publication of scientific papers.

Traditional Model: Scientists protect their most promising discoveries until the results are published in scientific journals. This causes delays ranging from months to years before others can learn and benefit from their discoveries.

2

Comprehensive Research Plan

ARC: Scientific experiments are mapped to an overall research plan focused on identifying therapeutic targets that will lead to patient treatments.

Traditional Research: Scientists operate in silos focused on narrow biological discoveries with no long-term focus on a particular disease or patient treatments.

3

Intellectual Property Protection

ARC: Aggressive IP policy protects discoveries and reduces risk for commercial development.

Traditional Model: Slow and unpredictable paybacks discourage university tech transfer offices from making the sizable investment in protecting intellectual property derived from biological discoveries.

4

Translational Medicine Platform

ARC: A systematic strategy for determining the degree to which the discoveries made by academic scientists in animal cultures and models will be consistent with results of the same or similar studies in relevant human tissue.

Traditional Model: There is currently no systematic way to determine whether discoveries made in animal models of neurological diseases will translate effectively to human systems.

5

Industry Partnerships

ARC: Actively promotes relationship building with biotech and pharmaceutical companies to encourage evaluation and licensing for drug development and clinical trials.

Traditional Model: Few formal ties between academic scientists and the pharmaceutical industry.

5

Patient Outcome Focus

ARC: Measures success in the delivery of patient treatments.

Traditional Model: In academia, success is measured by the number of scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals. In pharma, success is measured by increased shareholder value.

Our Model = Progress

"If you just leave it to basic scientists working alone in their own labs, converting basic scientific discoveries into drugs almost never happens. Without the ARC model there is no infrastructure for accelerating drug development. "
